Lionel Messi Makes Major Donation for Wildfire Relief Efforts

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has come forward to support the people of Madrid’s Sierra Oeste region after devastating wildfires swept through the area. The World Cup-winning captain has donated €80,000—around BDT 11.5 million (1.15 crore)—to assist recovery and reconstruction efforts.

The contribution was confirmed on Tuesday by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid, through a social media post. She thanked Messi for his generosity and said the people of Madrid look forward to welcoming him and expressing their appreciation in person.

The recent wildfires caused severe damage across 17 municipalities in the Sierra Oeste region, destroying nearly 30,000 hectares of land. Forest areas, homes, and local businesses were among the hardest hit. In response, the Madrid regional government launched an online donation platform that allows contributions through bank transfers and other payment methods.

Alongside the fundraising campaign, local authorities have announced a 43-point reconstruction plan. The package includes direct financial support for affected businesses, tax relief measures, and approximately €20 million allocated for infrastructure recovery and rebuilding projects.

Messi’s involvement in charitable and humanitarian work is well established. Through the Leo Messi Foundation, he has supported numerous initiatives focused on children’s health and education around the world.

This is not the first time the Argentine forward has made a significant contribution during a crisis. In 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, he donated €1 million to a hospital in Barcelona and a medical center in his hometown of Rosario.

Although Messi spent the most successful years of his career in Barcelona, his latest gesture once again shows that humanitarian concerns rise above football rivalries, with the Sierra Oeste donation becoming another example of his commitment to helping communities in need.
