Are Barcelona Champions League Favourites? Flick Warns: ‘The Road Is Still Very Long’

Barcelona have made a flying start to the new season, and their early form has already placed them among the leading contenders for the Champions League.

Hansi Flick’s side have won all eight of their La Liga matches so far, scoring 34 goals in the process. They also opened their Champions League campaign with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Dutch club Feyenoord.

But despite the impressive numbers, Flick is refusing to label Barcelona as clear favourites for the European title.

‘The Road to the End Is Very Long’

Asked about Barcelona being considered favourites, Flick urged his players and supporters to remain focused.

“It is a privilege to be in this position. We have worked very hard. And in my opinion, the road to the end is still very long.”

Flick wants his team to maintain the same mentality that helped them make such a strong start to the campaign.

“We have to play every match with the same mentality we had at the beginning. I just want to win, we all want that and that is our goal.”

The German coach has also been pleased to see his players enjoying their football, something he believes is an important part of the team’s current momentum.

Barcelona’s Brilliant Start

Barcelona have been unbeaten in their eight La Liga matches, winning every game and scoring 34 goals. The Catalan side are also the defending Spanish champions after winning the league title in each of the last two seasons.

Their Champions League campaign began in equally impressive fashion, with a 5-1 victory over Feyenoord.

Barcelona will now travel to Turkey to face Galatasaray on Tuesday as they look to continue their winning run.

‘The Hunger Is Still There’

Flick was also asked whether his squad has even more hunger for success than before.

“Of course, we have that hunger,” he said. “Many of them have won the World Cup and, whether they still have that hunger—yes, they do.”

The coach believes his players want to perform not only for themselves but also for their supporters and families.

“It is difficult and the road is long,” Flick added, again stressing that Barcelona still have plenty of challenges ahead.

Barcelona Chasing a First Champions League Title Since 2015

Barcelona last lifted the Champions League trophy in 2015. More than a decade later, the club are once again being discussed among the leading contenders for European glory.

Their start has certainly strengthened those expectations. But with only one round of the league phase completed, Flick knows there is a long way to go before the trophy can be claimed.

For now, his message is simple: enjoy the football, keep the hunger and take the competition one match at a time.
