Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s Final Days: Music Remained His Passion Until the End
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan mesmerized millions of listeners around the world with his powerful qawwali performances. His voice transcended Pakistan and earned him a prominent place in the international music scene. He played a major role in bringing Sufi and qawwali music to a global audience.
However, serious health problems weakened him during the final years of his life. Despite his deteriorating health, the legendary singer never completely stepped away from music.
September 13 marks his birth anniversary. On this day, here is a look back at the final days of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s life.
He Continued Making Music Despite Illness
Nusrat had an extraordinary ability to perform qawwali for extended periods. His command over rhythm, vocal range and intense stage presence captivated audiences everywhere. But toward the end of his life, his health was no longer supporting him as it once did.
He was undergoing treatment for kidney problems and required regular dialysis. Even so, he remained deeply involved in music and continued working despite his physical condition.
Around a month before his death, Nusrat met Pakistani musician Salman Ahmad. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Salman recalled that Nusrat did not appear to be in good health at the time. Despite being seriously ill, he remained extremely busy with his musical commitments.
Salman felt that Nusrat needed to take some time off and rest. But that break never came. Within a few weeks, his condition became critical.
Music Was Still on His Mind
Another memory of Nusrat’s final days was shared by his nephew and fellow musician Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.
According to a 2025 report published by The Nation, Rahat recalled that Nusrat appeared sad and concerned while traveling to the airport for a trip to the United States.
Yet even during that difficult period, music remained at the center of his thoughts. He played recordings from a new album in the car while discussing plans for its release.
His condition was deteriorating, but his passion for creating and releasing new music had not faded.
He Planned to Travel to the United States for Treatment
In August 1997, Nusrat was scheduled to travel to the United States for medical treatment related to his kidney problems. A kidney transplant was also reportedly being considered.
However, his health deteriorated before he could reach the United States. During a stopover in London, his condition became worse and he was admitted to Cromwell Hospital on August 9.
Doctors treated him for serious kidney complications, while reports also mentioned liver problems. He was also suffering from diabetes and hepatitis.
His Condition Suddenly Worsened
Nusrat remained under medical care in London as his health continued to deteriorate. A report published by Pakistan’s Dawn on August 17, 1997, detailed the final hours of the legendary singer.
According to the report, his condition began to worsen in the early hours of the morning. He was subsequently moved to the intensive care unit, where doctors tried to save his life.
Despite their efforts, Nusrat could not be revived. He died at 11:57 a.m., at the age of just 48, after suffering from serious kidney and liver complications.
His manager Haji Iqbal Naqvi, former Pakistani cricketer Javed Miandad and several other acquaintances were reportedly among those present during his final moments.
News of his death quickly spread, prompting an outpouring of grief across Pakistan and the international music community.
A Legendary Voice That Never Truly Fell Silent
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was far more than a Pakistani singer. Through his extraordinary voice, he introduced qawwali and Sufi music to audiences around the world.
He also collaborated with several Western musicians and built a global following through his distinctive vocal style and powerful performances.
Even as his health deteriorated during the final chapter of his life, his passion for music remained unchanged. He continued thinking about new albums, recordings and musical projects until the end.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan died at just 48, but his voice never truly fell silent. Decades after his death, his qawwali continues to reach millions of listeners around the world, keeping the legacy of one of the greatest voices in Sufi music alive.
