Vijay’s TVK May Join INDIA Bloc Protests at National Level

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the party led by actor and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, may participate in opposition INDIA bloc protests at the national level, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan has indicated.

The INDIA bloc’s Tamil Nadu unit held a protest in Chennai on October 15 against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. TVK participated in the demonstration for the first time. Speaking to news agency ANI on Friday, Thirumavalavan said the party could take part in similar protests at the national level in the future. <Cite refs={["turn916382search1","turn916382search3","turn916382search5"]}/>

Opposition Raises Concerns Over Voter List Revision

The protest was organised amid objections from opposition parties to the SIR process. Opposition leaders have expressed concern that eligible voters could be removed from electoral rolls during the revision exercise. They have called for safeguards to protect voting rights and demanded the removal of the chief election commissioner.

TVK’s participation signals closer engagement with opposition parties in Tamil Nadu. However, the extent of the party’s involvement in INDIA bloc activities at the national level remains unclear.

TVK’s Growing Engagement With the INDIA Bloc

Founded in 2024 by Vijay, TVK entered politics seeking to establish itself as an alternative to Tamil Nadu’s established political parties.

On October 3, the party attended a meeting involving the Tamil Nadu unit of the INDIA bloc, with representatives from the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, MDMK and the Indian Union Muslim League. Its participation in the October 15 protest marked a further step in its engagement with the opposition alliance. <Cite refs={["turn916382search8","turn916382search10"]}/>

Earlier, on October 10, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met Vijay at the actor-politician’s residence in Chennai. The meeting added to discussions about possible political coordination between the Congress and TVK.

Will TVK Join National-Level Agitations?

According to Thirumavalavan, TVK has joined the INDIA bloc’s Tamil Nadu unit and may participate in future national-level protests. However, no specific schedule or formal announcement from TVK confirming its participation in a national protest has been reported.

Attention will now turn to the party’s next steps and the extent of its involvement in the opposition’s campaign over electoral roll revisions and the Election Commission.
