20 Years Later, Bilic and Modric Reunite as Croatia Begin With a Win

Slaven Bilic and Luka Modric have reunited in Croatian football after two decades, with Bilic back in charge of the national team and Modric still leading the side on the pitch.

The reunion began with a memorable result as Croatia defeated Czechia 2–1 at Fortuna Arena in Prague in their Nations League opener, with 41-year-old Modric getting on the scoresheet.

Bilic first worked with Modric in 2006, when he was in charge of Croatia’s Under-21 side. Modric was then an emerging midfielder who was beginning to attract attention as one of the country’s promising young players.

Later that year, Bilic took charge of the senior national team and continued to develop Modric as an important member of Croatia’s new generation.

Under Bilic, Croatia reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2008 before the coach eventually left his position in 2012.

After a long absence, Bilic returned to the Croatia job this summer. His first match back brought him together with Modric once again—and his former young player marked the occasion with a goal.

For Modric, the match was another remarkable chapter in a career that has continued well into his 40s. At 41, he remains an important figure for Croatia and added another goal to his international record.

Croatia ultimately secured a 2–1 victory over Czechia, giving Bilic a winning start to his latest spell in charge and making the long-awaited reunion with Modric even more memorable.
