A New Era Begins for Dutch Cricket as Scott Edwards Hands Over Captaincy to Bas de Leede

Netherlands wicketkeeper-batter Scott Edwards has announced that he is relinquishing the captaincy of the national side. The Royal Dutch Cricket Association (KNCB) officially confirmed the development on Friday through a video posted on its social media channels.

All-rounder Bas de Leede has been entrusted with the leadership for the remaining fixtures of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2. He will captain the Dutch side in the concluding matches of the campaign against Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

Speaking to his teammates in the video, Edwards explained that the decision may have come as a surprise, but it followed extensive discussions with the coaching group over a considerable period. He said he still feels capable of contributing significantly as a cricketer and wants to dedicate his full attention to his role as a player going forward.

Edwards became Netherlands captain in June 2022. During his spell in charge, he led the team in 56 One-Day Internationals and 50 Twenty20 Internationals. Under his leadership, the Dutch produced standout victories against South Africa and Bangladesh at the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. They also defeated Zimbabwe and South Africa at the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, a result that ended the Proteas’ campaign.

New captain Bas de Leede praised Edwards for his impact on the team, saying he had guided the squad through many demanding contests and consistently showed faith in the players. According to de Leede, Edwards often provided clarity, belief, and confidence even at times when some members of the group doubted themselves.

The Netherlands currently occupy second place in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 table. The top four teams in the competition will secure places in the qualification tournament for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
