Iran Prepares for Broader Retaliation if US Launches New Major Attack
Iran Prepares for Broader Retaliation if US Launches New Major Attack
Iran is preparing a broader and stronger response if the United States launches another major military operation, while Tehran continues diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict from expanding further.
According to a person familiar with the discussions and three senior Iranian officials, senior military commanders in Iran are reviewing plans to expand the potential targets of any retaliatory campaign.
The officials said the plans could go beyond sites directly linked to the United States. Countries supporting a US military operation could also see some of their interests considered as potential targets, while locations outside the Middle East could also be included.
Iran Tells Allied Groups to Prepare
Two Iranian officials said Tehran has instructed allied armed groups in Lebanon, Yemen and Iraq to be prepared to support Iran if the United States launches another large-scale attack.
According to the officials, preparations for a coordinated response could cover a wide geographical area, from the Strait of Hormuz and other parts of the Middle East to US-linked interests beyond the region.
Iran's Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
There has been no public confirmation from Tehran detailing the reported military plans.
Tehran Seeks to Avoid a Wider Conflict
Iranian leaders increasingly believe that any new major US military campaign would require a tougher response than before, according to the officials.
At the same time, Tehran is continuing diplomatic efforts in an attempt to prevent the conflict from spreading into a wider regional confrontation.
Although some Iranian officials privately remain doubtful about the chances of diplomacy succeeding, discussions are continuing as Tehran seeks to keep a political channel open.
Political Pressure in the US Also on Iran's Radar
Tehran is also assessing the potential political consequences of a prolonged conflict for US President Donald Trump.
Iranian officials are reportedly taking into account public opinion in the United States, concerns over higher energy prices and the approaching US midterm elections.
The developments leave Iran pursuing two tracks at the same time: preparing for a potentially wider military response while maintaining diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the conflict.
