"Jesus didn't keep his word"—Ronaldo reveals the full story behind leaving the Portugal camp.

Days after leaving the Portugal national team camp, Cristiano Ronaldo has finally opened up about the entire incident. In a lengthy statement released on social media, the Portugal captain presented his perspective on the sequence of events. He also apologized to fans and teammates and acknowledged his willingness to accept punishment for his mistake. Reuters
Ronaldo alleged that coach Jorge Jesus failed to keep promises made to him on two occasions. After the second instance, he decided to leave the national team camp rather than wait for further assurances. However, the coach has denied certain aspects of Ronaldo's account regarding their conversations.

It started with a different plan
According to Ronaldo, following the 2026 World Cup, the President of the Portuguese Football Federation had asked him to reconsider his decision regarding the national team. He was later consulted on the selection of Jorge Jesus as the new coach; Ronaldo stated that he, too, considered Jesus a suitable choice.
In their first meeting, Jesus identified Ronaldo as a key part of his plans. Ronaldo claims he was told he would play the opening and closing matches and would be regularly substituted in other games based on his physical condition.
There was even a suggestion that Ronaldo skip the away trips to Norway and Denmark. However, the Portugal captain rejected the proposal, feeling that staying behind while the team played abroad would not set a good example for a captain.

The situation changed during the match against Norway
On the afternoon of the match against Norway, Jesus's assistant informed Ronaldo that the coach wanted to speak with him. Ronaldo claims Jesus told him then that he would play for 30 minutes.
Accordingly, Ronaldo began warming up at the start of the second half. However, as time passed, he was never sent onto the pitch.
In Ronaldo's words, "The coach did not keep his word." This incident became the primary source of his frustration. He did not even go to acknowledge the fans after the match. However, Ronaldo has admitted responsibility for this behavior.
Apologizing to the people of Portugal, he stated that he should not have acted that way in front of the supporters. He also subsequently apologized to his national team teammates. —

A promise broken for the second time — Ronaldo’s claim
Ronaldo revealed that a meeting took place between Jesus, himself, and Al-Nassr’s sporting director, Simo Coutinho, 48 hours after the Norway match.
He claims an agreement was reached there: Jesus would clarify the matter at a press conference—stating that Ronaldo had not demanded to play, that it was the coach's mistake to have him warm up without fielding him, and that such an incident would not happen again.
Ronaldo mentioned that an eight-point document regarding this was even drawn up. However, he alleges that Jesus's statements at the subsequent press conference did not align with that agreement.
In Ronaldo's words, this was the second time Jesus failed to keep his word to him. Consequently, he decided to leave the camp without waiting for any further promises.

‘The truth is what matters most to me’
Throughout his lengthy statement, Ronaldo repeatedly emphasized one thing: the truth.
He stated that truth is paramount to him in relationships. No matter how difficult the truth might be, he wants to be told exactly what it is.
In his view, had the federation president and the coach directly informed him that they did not want him in the national team, he would have accepted that. However, it was the breach of promise—after being told he was part of the national team—that hurt him the most.

Ronaldo also admits his own mistake
While he spoke of the conflict with the coach, Ronaldo did not claim that his decision to leave the camp was entirely correct. Instead, he clearly stated that, as captain, he should not have left the team in that manner.
In his words, "The responsibility is mine alone."
He also suggested that the Portuguese Football Federation should evaluate his actions and impose a penalty; in fact, Ronaldo believes the punishment should not be reduced. For he is not merely an ordinary player; he is also the team's captain.

Ronaldo is not leaving the national team.
The most significant message concerns his future. Ronaldo has clarified that this incident does not signal his retirement from the national team.
Once his suspension ends, provided he remains physically fit and performs well for his club, he is ready to take the field for Portugal again.
In other words, despite a serious rift with Jesus, the 41-year-old star has not closed the door on playing for Portugal. On the contrary, in his own words, he remains as ready as ever to compete and win for his country.
Ronaldo has also reassured fans regarding a future farewell match—acknowledging that there will be an opportunity for one or more farewell games with the national team, though for him, the priority remains competition, not the farewell itself.
