Messi Shines with Brace and Record in Inter Miami Victory

Lionel Messi once again produced a magical performance in the Leagues Cup, scoring twice, providing an assist, and setting a new tournament record as Inter Miami defeated Mexico’s Atlético San Luis 4-2 in an entertaining encounter at Miami’s NRG Stadium.

The match began in disappointing fashion for the home side. Atlético San Luis struck in the fourth minute when David Rodríguez headed home after a well-worked move, giving the visitors an early advantage and putting Miami under immediate pressure.

Inter Miami responded quickly, and unsurprisingly Messi was at the heart of the comeback. In the 10th minute, Noah Allen delivered a low ball into the box from the left flank. Despite the crowded penalty area, Messi found a small pocket of space and fired a first-time volley into the net to bring Miami level.

The game continued at a high tempo. Goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo made an excellent diving save in the 14th minute to keep Miami in the contest. Atlético San Luis thought they had regained the lead in the 23rd minute when David Pinter finished from Casemiro’s brilliant pass, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Miami took the lead in the 26th minute, and once again Noah Allen played a key role. Racing onto a perfectly timed through ball, he broke behind the San Luis defense before squaring for Telasco Segovia, who calmly finished from close range.

As halftime approached, Inter Miami took complete control of the match. Messi scored his second goal in the 44th minute after a clever combination around the penalty area. Allen found Yannick Bright inside the box, and Bright intelligently let the ball run through to Messi, who reacted in an instant and finished clinically through the crowd of defenders.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Miami extended their lead to 4-1. Messi’s perfectly delivered corner was met by Brazilian defender Micael Silva, who powered a header into the net to cap a dominant opening 45 minutes.

Atlético San Luis showed some fight after the break. In the 51st minute, Rafa Llorente produced a stunning strike to reduce the deficit to 4-2. Heavy rain later disrupted the rhythm of the game, and although both sides created a few chances, no further goals were scored.

The night, however, belonged to Messi. His two goals took his Leagues Cup tally to 14 goals, making him the tournament’s all-time leading scorer since its expanded format was introduced in 2023. He moved ahead of Los Angeles FC forward Denis Bouanga.

The Argentine superstar has now scored multiple goals in five of his 12 Leagues Cup appearances, underlining his extraordinary influence on the competition.

Two goals, one assist, a new record, and a commanding victory for Inter Miami — it was another unforgettable night for Lionel Messi, who once again proved that even as the years pass, his ability to decide big matches remains as strong as ever.
