Green is the traditional color associated with Pakistan on the cricket field. However, in their match against England, the Pakistani cricketers have swapped their familiar green for pink jerseys. This departure from their usual colors at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium serves a noble purpose: raising awareness about breast cancer.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has dedicated the fourth match of the ongoing ODI tri-series—featuring Pakistan, England, and Sri Lanka—to breast cancer awareness. October is observed globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this special initiative is part of that observance.
A Pink Makeover for Gaddafi Stadium
The touch of pink extends beyond the players' jerseys; the entire Gaddafi Stadium has been adorned in the color. The stumps used in the match are pink, and the stadium’s large screens and LED boards are displaying messages to raise awareness about breast cancer.
England’s cricketers, match officials, and commentators have also joined the cause. They are wearing pink ribbons as a gesture of solidarity with those currently battling breast cancer and those who have recovered from the disease.

PCB’s Initiative to Boost Awareness
This initiative is part of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s social responsibility program and is being supported by the Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Trust Hospital.
The primary goal is to highlight the importance of early detection and encourage patients to seek timely medical treatment. By leveraging a sport as popular as cricket, the organizers aim to reach a wider audience with this vital awareness message.
Sumair Ahmad Syed, Chief Operating Officer of the PCB, noted that the immense popularity and influence of cricket in Pakistan carry with them a sense of social responsibility. Through the 'Pink Ribbon' initiative, the board aims to leverage the platform of international cricket to raise awareness about breast cancer, while highlighting the importance of early detection and timely treatment.
A First in ODIs; Precedent Set in T20s
This is not the first time Pakistani cricketers have worn pink jerseys to promote breast cancer awareness. Last year, during a T20 series against South Africa, Pakistan also observed a 'Pink Day'.
However, this marks the first time such an initiative has been undertaken in ODI cricket. By integrating a message of social awareness alongside the on-field competition, this effort positions cricket not merely as a stage for sporting rivalry, but also as a powerful medium for fostering public awareness.
