Javier Tebas Referred to Sports Tribunal Over Comments About Real Madrid

La Liga president Javier Tebas has been referred to Spain's Sports Tribunal after comparing the alleged promotional tactics of Real Madrid TV and the club's management to methods used by the Nazi Party in Germany.

Spain's National Sports Council (CSD) announced on Thursday that it had brought the matter before the Sports Tribunal. The council has asked the tribunal to examine whether Tebas's comments breached Article 76.4.b of Sports Law 10/1990.

The provision considers conduct that damages the dignity or integrity of sport to be a serious offence. Possible sanctions include a warning, financial penalty or temporary suspension.

Tebas, 64, made the controversial comments on social media last Friday. Real Madrid responded on the same day with a strongly worded statement and called for the immediate resignation of the La Liga president.

Tebas Defends His Comments

Following the CSD's announcement, Tebas responded on social media and clarified his position.

He said he had not compared Real Madrid's ideology or its supporters with the Nazi Party. Instead, he argued that his comments were directed at what he described as the club's promotional and communication strategy.

Tebas also suggested that similar action could be considered against Real Madrid over the club's criticism of the integrity of La Liga.

“Protecting the competition means responding to those who constantly try to damage its reputation. That is part of my responsibility, and I will continue to fulfil it,” Tebas wrote.

Long-Running Dispute With Real Madrid

The latest controversy is another chapter in the long-running dispute between Tebas and Real Madrid.

The club called for a new La Liga president in September after Tebas criticised its complaints over refereeing decisions, describing them as an attempt to create a distraction from failures on the pitch.

Tebas has served as La Liga president since 2013. He was re-elected unopposed in 2023, with his current term running until 2027.

The Sports Tribunal will now assess whether Tebas's remarks violated the relevant provisions of Spanish sports law. Its review will determine whether any disciplinary action should follow.
