Punishment for leaving national team camp: Ronaldo handed 30-day ban and a fine
Cristiano Ronaldo is facing disciplinary action for leaving the Portuguese national team camp following a disagreement with his coach. The Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Football Federation has imposed a 30-day suspension and a fine of 255 euros on him.
In a statement released today, the Portuguese Football Federation’s Disciplinary Council announced the sanctions, noting that the charges brought against the 41-year-old forward have been substantiated.
Earlier this month, Ronaldo was left on the bench during a match against Norway. He subsequently accused Portugal coach Jorge Jesus of failing to keep a promise. Following this dispute, the Portuguese star departed the national team’s camp in Copenhagen ahead of a Nations League match against Denmark.
While Jesus denied that any agreement had been reached with Ronaldo, he later indicated that the door remains open for the player’s return to the national team.
Ronaldo admits fault and apologizes
Ronaldo has apologized for failing to acknowledge the fans and for leaving his teammates behind following the match against Norway. He stated that he is prepared to accept whatever punishment is handed down and remains ready to return to the national team once the sanction has been served.
According to the Disciplinary Council, Ronaldo deliberately violated the federation’s code of conduct. However, the statement did not specify which particular matches or activities the suspension would cover. It also remains unclear whether any time already served under a provisional suspension will be credited toward the 30-day penalty.
Portugal hopes for Ronaldo’s return
Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, expressed that once the matter is resolved, everyone at the federation would like to see Ronaldo return to the national team.
Portugal’s next match is scheduled for November 15 against Denmark. The impact of Ronaldo’s suspension on that match—or on future international fixtures—will depend on the specific terms regarding the implementation of the sanction. Ronaldo has long been a key pillar of Portugal’s attack. Consequently, there is significant interest within the Portuguese football community regarding his suspension and his return to the national team.
