Rodri’s future appears to be finally taking shape. According to the BBC, Barcelona have reached an agreement with Manchester City to sign the Spanish midfielder for a reported £65 million transfer fee.
The BBC and several other British media outlets report that the 30-year-old has agreed to a four-year contract with the Spanish champions. The transfer is expected to be completed within the next few days.
Barcelona were not the only Spanish giants interested in Rodri. Reports had previously suggested that Real Madrid were also monitoring the midfielder. However, Rodri was understood to be keen on a move to Barcelona, and his preference now appears set to become reality.
Rodri joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for a then club-record £62.8 million. He quickly established himself as one of Pep Guardiola’s most important players, becoming a central figure in the club’s trophy-laden era.
During seven successful seasons at City, Rodri made 298 appearances across all competitions. He won 12 major trophies with the club, including four Premier League titles, one Champions League and two FA Cups.
His last two seasons, however, were disrupted by injuries. A serious knee problem kept him out for much of the 2024-25 campaign, while a hamstring issue also forced him to spend significant time on the sidelines last season.
Rodri put those setbacks behind him and returned to his best form at the World Cup, which concluded last month. He played a key role in Spain’s title-winning campaign and was rewarded with the tournament’s Golden Ball as its best player.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner’s potential move to Barcelona would mark the beginning of a new chapter in his career. With an agreement reportedly already in place, the football world is now waiting for the official confirmation of one of the summer’s biggest transfers.
