Ronaldo Hints at Retirement: ‘This Could Be My Last Year’
Cristiano Ronaldo has given his clearest indication yet that his extraordinary football career could be nearing its end. The 41-year-old Portuguese superstar has revealed that the current season could be his final year as a professional footballer.
Speaking to fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue, Ronaldo said: “This will probably be my last year in football. I want to leave an incredible legacy in the game.”
Ronaldo remains under contract with Saudi club Al Nassr until June 2027, but speculation over his retirement has continued for some time. While he had previously avoided giving a definite timeline, his latest comments suggest that the end of his playing career could now be closer than ever.
Last November, Ronaldo said he intended to continue playing for another one or two years and confirmed that the 2026 World Cup would be his final appearance at the tournament. Portugal were eliminated by Spain in the World Cup, but Ronaldo did not immediately comment on his retirement afterward.
He has now revealed that he has already begun planning his life after football, with spending more time with his family set to be one of his biggest priorities.
“I already have the whole outline of my future,” Ronaldo said. He admitted that leaving football would create a major void in his life, but said he has plenty of plans to keep himself busy. He wants to travel more, spend time playing and watching padel, and most importantly, enjoy the rewards of a career built on 25 years of sacrifice.
Ronaldo gave the interview five days before marrying his longtime partner, Georgina Rodríguez, in Portugal. His professional journey began at Sporting Lisbon before taking him to Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. He has played for Al Nassr since January 2023.
His nine-year spell at Real Madrid remains one of the defining periods of his career. Ronaldo scored a club-record 450 goals in 438 appearances for the Spanish giants.
He also scored three goals for Portugal at the 2026 World Cup, where the team reached the last 16.
After a remarkable 25-year career filled with records, trophies and individual honours, Ronaldo now appears to be preparing for life beyond professional football.
If his latest comments prove accurate, one of the greatest careers in football history may be entering its final chapter.
