Bavuma Hits Career-Best 179 as South Africa Declare on 425
Temba Bavuma produced a stunning career-best innings of 179 to help South Africa recover from early trouble and declare their first innings at 425 against Australia in the Gqeberha Test.
Bavuma resumed the third day unbeaten on 41 and initially found himself under pressure after Wiaan Mulder was dismissed early. He then combined with Marco Jansen to steady the innings, with their 185-ball partnership producing 132 runs.
Jansen scored 85 before falling short of a century, but Bavuma continued his resistance with Simon Harmer. The pair added 183 runs for the eighth wicket, helping South Africa move beyond 400.
Harmer eventually fell for a career-best 82, while Bavuma continued until he was dismissed for 179. He faced 334 balls over 552 minutes, hitting 18 fours and one six.
Bavuma's First Test Century Against Australia
Bavuma reached his fifth Test century from 226 balls. Four of his five Test hundreds have now come as South Africa captain.

It was also Bavuma's first Test century against Australia and his highest score in Test cricket. His 179 is also the highest score by a South African captain against Australia.
Australia's Scott Boland claimed five wickets, but Bavuma's remarkable resistance put South Africa in a strong position.
Australia then had just four overs to bat before the close and lost Nick Maddinson for a duck to Kagiso Rabada. They ended the day on 3 for 1, leaving the final two days of the Test intriguingly poised.
